Coaching philosophy & FAQ
You are an athlete
If you run and want to commit to your running, you are an athlete in my books. I get as much out of seeing one of my athletes finish their first marathon as smash a PR. Your goals matter to me.
Who do I coach
Whilst I love to coach anyone who wants to get a little closer to their potential, I’ve built a lot of experience with first time ultra runners, runners stepping up to a new challenge (further, faster…), reaching up from club level to national/international, and also working with the effects of ageing, the menstrual cycle and managing chronic illness as an athlete.
Is it only for ultra runners?
No! I also work with runners working towards a first 5 km, or faster 10 km. I do encourage lots of off road training though as it can help reduce repetitive injury risk and is so much fun!
What about strength and conditioning?
Strength and conditioning comes as part of the package, if wanted. I have a professional diploma in Strength & Conditioning from Barca Innovation Hub (part of FC Barcelona), this was a 9-month course with coursework, tests, an exam and over 360 hours of study.
Your strength sessions can be as short as 5-10 minutes or the full 40-60 minutes depending on your availability, commitment and goals.
Are my payments secure?
All payments are handled by well-established payment processors like Stripe and PayPal.
Refunds will be minus a £4 admin fee to cover costs from banks and these payment processors.
What does unlimited contact mean?
You can contact me by WhatsApp or email as much as needed so long as it is 100% related to your training, or a picture of a dog.
Do you run training camps?
Not yet, but I do live in Spain’s training hotspot, where a number of pro cycle teams and the Brownlee brothers spend the winter! Spaces will be limited with priority sign up given to my athletes. Trips will be in collaboration with David of Ultimate Trail Adventures
No cookie cutter plans
Pre-made plans know nothing about your training history or life commitments, which is why every one of my plans comes with a pre-plan zoom call and unlimited contact to allow us to work around unexpected hiccups or opportunities.
Research
I read a lot of sports science - and take care to apply it only when it’s appropriate. For instance, a study of the fat burning potential of men in their 20s may have no relevance to a man in his 50s or a woman in her 20s. Sometimes new research shows we got things wrong, if the evidence is good, I’ll adapt.
Why do I get a Zoom call at the end of my plan?
This is your opportunity to chat through how it’s gone, get extra advice, and ask any final questions.
What do you do with my data?
Your training plan is hosted on Training Peaks and your payments are all through PayPal or Stripe. If I keep notes related to your training on my personal computer, it will be stuff like:
“Really hates 5 minute reps, find alternative”
“Cannot run on Wednesdays”
You are welcome to request them at any time or ask me to delete them.
I’m a big fan of opt-in, rather than opt out. If in the future I start running online events such as group meet ups or info sessions I’ll invite athletes to opt in to emails. I’ll never just sign you up.
I’ve compared the plans and need help choosing
You are welcome to get in touch using the contact form. Include where your fitness is now and what you want to achieve.
What kind of sessions do you set?
I have created a library of over a hundred sessions so I can truly personalise your schedule. The sessions you get will depend on which areas you need to improve and what your goal races are. But I also believe that enjoyment is really important so that is taken into account, as is how your body responds to training. No one should be tired all the time. Athletes who recover slowly might get a shorter second interval session with tiny bursts of high intensity like Tiger Hills, which focuses on neuromuscular development without accruing more fatigue.
Are you LGBT friendly?
Of course.
Running is awesome
I love running, it’s awesome. I want everyone to love running! So plans are crafted to help you reach your potential with maximum fun. If there is a session you dread we’ll find another way of getting the same physiological adaptations.
Is Premium worth it?
I think so! I’ll look at your training diary every day and make adjustments as needed. We’ll zoom every two weeks and you’ll also have unlimited contact via WhatsApp. We’ll work together to make sure you get to your race physically, mentally and logistically prepared.
When available you get a high quality, fully recycled, Ultra Potential running shirt
I’ve got a long term health condition, will you work with me?
Absolutely, so long as a doctor has not told you not to exercise. I have two long term conditions so have personal experience of what it’s like to balance training with a body that’s not always willing.
I have accessibility problems with Zoom, can you work with me?
Let’s discuss it (using your prefered method of communication) and see what we can do. Click this text to go to contact form.
I don’t only want to run can you work with that?
Yes so long as running is your main focus as that’s where my knowledge and experience is. I’m a huge fan of cross training so I’ll be more than happy to include your weekly ballet class or football.
Can we ride together on Zwift?
I love Zwift for cross training on my bike. Ultra Potential athletes with Zwift can join the Monday morning group ride. It is a “stay together” ride.
Do you coach juniors?
No, I don’t coach juniors. Young athletes develop best when they explore multiple sports and any scheduled training should be with an experienced junior coach. However I may consider free mentoring (over Zoom with a parent or guardian) in exceptional cases.
I’ve got a question not answered here
So long as it’s polite you are welcome to use the contact form
And finally…
I reserve the right to request you do not renew your membership or to cancel with a partial refund (as percentage of days unused). This will only happen in the case of a very serious breach of the professional athlete-coach relationship, such as harassment or abuse.
